The Testaments

The Testaments is a must read for fans of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. 

In this latest novel published more than thirty years after The Handmaid’s Tale Atwood revisits Gilead, a theocratic society in which women are forbidden to hold jobs, love whom they choose and are forbidden to read.  The Testaments is set fifteen years after the events in the original novel, however Offred is not the protagonist of this sequel. Instead we are slowly introduced to three different women from three separate parts of Society and how the regime of The Republic of Gilead impacted their past and continues to an impact on their present.  

I originally read The Handmaid’s Tale when I was eighteen in my “Women’s Literature” class and it was an eye-opening experience for me. The book and the class are what set me on my path for a thirst for strong female characters written by women.  

I loved the fact that Margaret Atwood has finally given us some closure in The Testaments. I have only read three of her books, but I look forward to remedying that fact in the future. I love her strong writing and I love the characters she creates for her readers even more. Be sure to grab a copy of this novel and enjoy.
