I love a good star crossed lover plot. That is how this young adult novel was marketed on the Book of the Month website for this years November picks. But this novel is so much more.
While the cast of characters were inspired by Shakespeares’s “Romeo & Juliet” Chloe Gong really only borrowed the star crossed lover from opposing factions theme. I loved that Juliette Cai is a capable and independent woman. Not a young simpering girl married off to an eligible male figure who is meant to take over the family business.
In contrast I feel that I only really began to understand our other protagonist of House Montagov towards the end of the novel. Roma instead of making grand sweeping gestures of undying love comes across has quiet and steady, an inner turmoil brewing just under there surface. I will be waiting patiently for the next installment of this star crossed drama.
